Background

On May 28, 2025, Lorde released the tracklist for Virgin. "Current Affairs" was shown as the sixth track on the album.

The song sees Lorde both reflect on a past relationship that was pretty much doomed to end from the start, but also sees her brushing off the current events she is experiencing in her life by purely blaming it on “current affairs”.

It was first revealed in a listening party held by Lorde taking place in New York on June 23, 2025, four days before the initial release of the album.
