"Homemade Dynamite" is a track from Lorde's sophomore album Melodrama. It was teased on a setlist for her pre-Coachella gig on April 14, 2017.
The remix was released on September 14th, 2017 as the third single from the album, serving as a remix featuring Khalid, Post Malone & SZA.
Background[]
Lorde performed the song at Coachella on April 16, 2017 and was revealed as the third song from the album Melodrama. After Lorde teased a new single on Instagram, many fans suspected the song was to be "Homemade Dynamite". But after the 2017 Manchester Arena bombings, many people were quick to point out it would be very inappropriate to release the song so soon after the attacks.
On Twitter, a user tagged Lorde saying that they were upset that Homemade Dynamite wasn't "the or a single", to which Lorde responded to saying that "the day's still young". Later on Instagram after the MTV VMAs, Lorde teased a possible video or remix with "******** ******** ***** coming soon!" This was later revealed to be a remix.
Writing and composition[]
"Homemade Dynamite" was co-written by Tove Lo. At Coachella she revealed it's about going out. About writing the song, Lorde commented:
“This song [was] one of the first songs to come together for the record and I wrote it with Tove Lo: sexy, Swedish, brash, bold. She’s wonderful. She’s so sweet. We hung out in LA and wrote and had a great time. She was kind of partying a lot at that time as well, so we had a lot in common writing-wise.”
In an interview, Lorde said that the song was also inspired by the band "Purity Ring". With the lines "We'll end up painted on the road, red and chrome, all the broken glass sparkling, I guess, we're partying" she wanted to express the same strange feeling Purity Ring does with their lyrics.
Live Performances[]
Lorde performed "Homemade Dynamite" at Coachella on April 16th, 2017. In August at the MTV VMAs, she did an interpretive dance to the song (she originally was to sing it, but due to a fever couldn't).
