"River" is an unreleased song by New Zealand singer-songwriter Lorde. The song is an outtake from her fourth studio album, Virgin, originally being the third track in between "What Was That" and "Shapeshifter", and is speculated to be featured on a deluxe edition of the album.
Background[]
On June 28, 2025, Lorde teased the song by posting an image of two whiteboards from the Virgin album process, which displayed the album's tracks and their stages in writing, production, vocal recording, and mixing. Fans noticed that three songs on the whiteboardsâ"Magnetic", "River", and "Trying"âwere not included on Virgin. These outtakes sparked speculation about a deluxe edition of Virgin that might include these teased tracks, along with rumored outtakes "Invisible Ink" and "Silver Moon."
Trivia[]
- On the album process whiteboards, Lorde wrote "Vocal blast" in the writing column of "River", hinting to a vocal tone or effect that Lorde conceived before the recording of the song. However, Lorde wrote "Finish?" in the production column of the song, creating speculation that the song's production was never finished.
- It is unknown if this song is the same song as "Take Me to the River".
- Due to the song's placement as the third track on the whiteboards' draft track listing, "River" may be the unknown Virgin song written with Fabiana Palladino which Lorde said she scrapped last minute as it "diluted the vision".
